Purpose: To examine the demographic characteristics, clinical symptoms, investigation modalities, travel time, type of surgical procedures and survival time of patients with acute aortic dissection of DeBakey I type.
Methods: Retrospective analysis of patients with acute aortic dissection operated on at the Department of Cardiac Surgery SÚSCCH, a. s. in Banská Bystrica in the period 2004 - 2020.
Results: In total, 280 patients were operated on for acute aortic syndrome, 260 of them (age 61.4 ± 5.6 years, male 69%) were operated on for dissection of DeBakey type I. Arterial hypertension, smoking and atherosclerosis were the most common risk factors, 80%, 28.5% and 18.1% respectively. Transport time was gradually shortened, from 20.4 h (2004 - 2012) to 15.8 h (2013 - 2019) and up to 9.3 h (2020). The most common surgical procedure was supracoronary ascending aorta replacement (70%). Operation mortality rate was 23% and 30-day mortality after cardiac surgery was 42%.
Conclusions: Patients with acute aortic dissection had typical cardio-vascular risk factors. Patients´ transport time was shortened by more than 2 times during the study period. Despite long-term experience, however, acute aortic dissection represents a life-threatening condition for the patient.
