Cardiological problems during physical exertion
Martin Studenčan, Marta Jakubová, Daniel Pella
Cardiology Letters 2024, 33(4):226-239
The physical load in the training process of some athletes goes up to the limit of health suitability. Cardiac causes are the most common cause of sudden death in athletes, while ordinary health examination cannot detect several hidden cardiac diseases. The authors present an overview of the most common cardiology diseases that can be detected during a comprehensive in-depth preventive cardiology examination if the most modern available examination technologies are used. For individual diseases, the relationship and risk of higher physical load is described.
Current treatment options for acute pulmonary embolism
Mária Domaracká
Cardiology Letters 2024, 33(4):240-247
Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a significant medical condition with substantial morbidity and mortality. The clinical signs are diverse and therefore our task is to study it, especially in severe cases that are promoted by the development of cardiogenic shock due to right ventricular failure. The topic of this article is an overview of the current options for the treatment for acute pulmonary embolism, bearing in mind risk stratification and the latest guidelines and recommendations of the European Society of Cardiology. Research and progress in medicine worldwide has moved on over the past decades and, new pharmacological and technical possibilities constantly...
Cognitive impairment and atrial fibrillation
Dominik Koreň, Milan Maretta, Zuzana Gdovinová
Cardiology Letters 2024, 33(4):248-258
The most frequent consequences or complications in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) include the occurrence of ischemic stroke, which is manifested by focal somatic neurodeficit, but often also by the development of non-somatic deficits, such as cognitive impairment. The aim of this review article is to summarize the current understanding of the relationship between FP and the development of cognitive impairment, while attention is paid to the implication of current knowledge in clinical practice in terms of therapeutic and preventive procedures.
Hypolipidemic therapy in the secondary prevention of cardiovascular events with regard to European guidelines and Slovak indication restrictions
Ivana Šoóšová
Cardiology Letters 2024, 33(4):259-265
Hypercholesterolemia is one of the most important modifiable risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. Reducing lifetime exposure to LDL-cholesterol significantly reduces cardiovascular risk. Current guidelines suggest lower LDL-C target values, especially in secondary prevention. In patients with documented atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, i.e. persons with a very high cardiovascular risk, the target value for LDL-C is at least <1.4 mmol/l. Statins are a basic component of almost all hypolipidemic strategies. In the last decade, we have witnessed progress in non-statin therapies, which allows for more intensive lowering of...
