Cardiology Letters 2019, 28(2):72-86

Summary. Background: Management of patients with patent foramen ovale (PFO) after cryptogenic ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) is inconsistent and significantly different in various institutions. Professional societies in Slovakia have not yet published a statement on this issue. Aims: To create a statement that would allow interested physicians the same approach to the management of PFO in patients with cryptogenic ischemic stroke or TIA. Methods: The opinion was drawn up by experts of the Slovak Society of Cardiology and the Slovak Neurological Society on the basis of published randomized clinical trials, registries and meta-analyses...

Significance of selected new biomarkers in diagnosis of abdominal aortic aneurysm

Farkašová Ľ, Rašiová M, Špak Ľ, Koščo M, Petrášová D, Hudák M, Valočik G

Cardiology Letters 2019, 28(2):87-93

Aim: Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. It is generally accepted that risk factors and gene polymorphism of immunoregulatory genes, metalloproteinases and cytokines contribute to the formation of AAA. Our aim was to determine the concentrations of selected serum biomarkers in patients with AAA and in a control group without AAA and to determine the relationship of selected biomarkers with regards to the disease. Methods: We evaluated selected types of novel serum biomarkers in AAA (insulin-like growth factor 1, peroxiredoxine, tenascin C, collagen IV and XVIII fragments) by ELISA in duplicate samples...

Clinical handover of patients for specialized centre care from pre-hospital to in-hospital care - a narrative review

Peran D, Pekara J, Cmorej PCh, Kohlova A, Marx D

Cardiology Letters 2019, 28(2):99-108

Introduction: During the last few years the role of non-technical skills including communication and cognitive aids is becoming more important and also influences pre-hospital care. This narrative review aims to summarize published articles on the information handover from pre-hospital to in-hospital care which is dominantly used in critically ill patients who need centre care (acute coronary syndromes, post resuscitation etc.). Literature search strategy: We undertook a literature search in the Scopus, Cinahl, Ovid and Medline databases, with inclusion and exclusion criteria, to find all articles about clinical handover from pre-hospital to in-hospital...

Case report

Delayed onset of ventricular fibrillation after low voltage electrical injury

Cmorej PCh, Peřan D, Amoussa J, Nedvěd V, Pekara J, Böhm P, Bulíková T

Cardiology Letters 2019, 28(2):109-113

Delayed onset of ventricular fibrillation is a very rare complication of low voltage electric shock. The authors present a case of a 23-year-old man with low voltage electrical injury with onset of ventricular fibrillation several minutes after the injury. The return of spontaneous circulation was reached after the third defibrillation shock and the patient left the hospital at his own request the day following the injury. The authors also describe the issue of monitoring of a patient affected by electric current. The aim of the case report is to point out the rarity of delayed onset of ventricular fibrillation after low voltage electrical injury.

Alirocumab reduces total non-fatal and fatal cardiovascular events - from the ODYSSEY OUTCOMES study

Murín J, Bulas J, Wawruch M

Cardiology Letters 2019, 28(2):94-98

The ODYSSEY OUTCOMES (Evaluation of Cardiovascular Outcomes after an Acute Coronary Syndrome during Treatment with Alirocumab) study compared alirocumab with placebo in 18 924 patients after acute coronary syndrome, where all patients had excellent secondary preventive treatment (maximum-tolerated statin treatment included). Alirocumab reduced the first occurrence of the primary composite endpoint [first cardiovascular (CV) events/mortality]. In this analysis the benefit of alirocumab treatment was evaluated on all CV events/mortality. These events were included: nonfatal myocardial infarction, non-fatal stroke, unstable angina pectoris with hospitalization,...
