Introduction: Data collection and subsequent analysis on patients with acute coronary syndrome without ST segment elevation (NSTE-ACS) in the Slovak Republic is provided to the SLOVACS registry, which comprehensively evaluates management of the NSTE-ACS patients. Objective: Analysis and evaluation of data from hospitalized patients with NSTE-ACS, assessment of non-invasive and invasive management, and implementation of guidelines in clinical practice Methodology: Collected data from patients hospitalized with diagnosis of NSTE-ACS were reported during 2 months (February and March, 2015). Selected indicators were assessed: risk profile, anamnestic data,...

Aims: Wine consumption is associated with a positive effect on blood cholesterol level. Data from prospective, long-term, head-to-head comparisons of different types of wine on blood cholesterol level are not sufficient. Methods and results: In Vino Veritas (IVV) study is a long-term, prospective, multi-centre, randomized trial comparing effects of red and white wine on atherosclerosis. 157 healthy subjects with a mild to moderate risk of cardiovascular diseases were randomized into two groups to white (WW, n=74) or red wine (RW, n=72) consumption for one year. We did not find an increase in HDL-cholesterol in the whole group at the end of follow-up...

Syncope unit - current trend in diagnostics and therapy of syncope
Mitro P
Cardiology Letters 2017, 26(2):89-97
Syncope is a frequent symptom of a broad spectrum of diseases encountered by general practioners and different specialists. Data from international registries show that contemporary clinical practice is characterized by excessive and non-selective use of diagnostic methods often in contradiction to current guidelines. This represents a burden to the patient, health care personnel and leads to depletion of economic resources. The current trend in syncope management is the creation of specialized syncope units (SU). An SU ensures the multidisciplinary approach and implementation of evidence-based medicine and current guidelines as well as the effective...
Genetics of peripheral arterial occlusive disease of the lower extremities (PAD)

Cardiology Letters 2017, 26(2):98-105
Atherosclerosis and its risk factors are one of the major health problems of western civilization. A number of risk factors that affect the development of atherosclerosis and peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAD) of the lower extremities are inherited (e.g. dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, hypertension). For PAD a polygenic pattern of inheritance is typical, as for other complex diseases. Predisposition to PAD development is also likely to be associated with genetic variants that increase the risk of its development and progression, regardless of traditional risk factors. Despite the fact that we live in a decade of many genetic discoveries,...
