The management of patients with persistent atrial fibrillation

Kmec J

Cardiology Letters 2016, 25(3):163-172

The management of patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) is focused on a reduction of symptoms and the prevention of severe complications associated with AF. Aim: Analysis of the management of patients with persistent atrial fibrillation. Methods: Retrospective analysis of a selected cohort of 108 patients with persistent AF (45.37% males, 54.63% women) who were hospitalized at the University Hospital Cardiocenter J.A. Reiman in Prešov in the period of 1st July 2014 to 31st December 2014 for the treatment of atrial fibrillation. Results: During the file analysis, we found more patients indicated initially for electrical than for pharmacological cardioversion...

Register of pacemakers and implanted cardioverter-defibrillators in the Slovak Republic

Kaliská G

Cardiology Letters 2016, 25(3):173-178

The Register of pacemakers, implanted cardioverter-defibrillators and cardiac resynchronization therapy devices of the Slovak Heart Rhythm Association is a continuously updated register of these procedures from 1993. In 2015, all 15 implantation centres entered the data into this register. Pacemakers: 3,664 units implanted, of which 2,810 were primary implantation, the equivalent of 518 units per 1 million inhabitants. ICD: 1,044 units implanted, of which 758 were primary implantation, the equivalent of 140 units per 1 million inhabitants. CRT: 588 units implanted, of which 388 were primary implantation (CRT-D 62,95 per cent, CRT-P 37,1 per cent),...

Register of cathether ablation in the Slovak Republic

Mišíková S

Cardiology Letters 2016, 25(3):179-184

Catheter ablation of tachyarrhythmias is at present a recognized method of treatment. We have kept a register of catheter ablation, named Slovablo, since 2012. The aim of the register is to inform about the number and type of catheter ablations in the different centres and throughout Slovakia. The Slovak Association of cardiac arrhythmias maintains the register. Fig. 18, Tab. 1, online full text (Free, PDF) www. cardiology.sk

Cardiovascular diseases and miRNA

Rabajdová M, Urban P, Špaková I, Sabol F, Mareková M

Cardiology Letters 2016, 25(3):185-189

Micro RNA (miRNA) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of many cardiovascular diseases e.g. cardiac fibrosis, hypertrophy, remodeling and reparation of post-ischemic injury, or myocardial infarction (MI). Several studies associate regulation of the expression of specific miRNAs, or disruption of the functional components of the RNA interference mechanism, with occurrence of diseases of the cardiovascular and circulatory system. This review article summarizes the basic understanding of miRNA biogenesis during organogenesis and physiological expression of specific miRNAs in comparison to their expression in a variety of cardiovascular diseases...
