The parameters of atrial deformation and their use in heart failure diagnostics

The role of echocardiography in heart failure patients is focused on determining the systolic and diastolic function of the left ventricle, while determining the deformation parameters of the left ventricle, known as global longitudinal strain (GLS), is important in detecting subclinical ventricular dysfunction. The proper function of the ventricles depends on preload, which depends on the proper function of the atrium. The assessment of the atrial function can provide information about hemodynamics, which can be important in diagnostics, prognosis, or evaluating the effectiveness of treatment in patients with heart failure. To assess atrial function, we can use the parameters of atrial deformation, where we determine the individual mechanical phases of the cycle and detect early changes in function. In this review article, we summarize the available data about atrial deformation parameters in individual phenotypes of heart failure.
