Intensified Outpatient Management Post Acute Coronary Syndrome (IMPAKS) - Description of the project

Coronary heart disease is one of the leading causes of deaths in Slovakia. The available data show that the mortality rate during the first year after myocardial infarction (IM) is higher in Slovakia compared to other countries. We assume that changes in ambulatory care after discharge for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) could lead to more effective secondary prevention and thus to a reduction in adverse cardiovascular events and mortality. The IMPAKS project (Intensified Outpatient Management After Acute Coronary Syndrome) a prospective, non-interventional, non-randomized, controlled study - investigates if provision of intensified, structured, guidelines directed outpatient care starting with discharge after STEMI will reduce the number of all cause deaths and cardiovascular hospitalizations compared to the standard management provided by the Slovak healthcare system. The effect of this intervention on selected cardiovascular events and risk factors will also be studied. Here we supply a summary of the epidemiological background, aims and methods of this project.
