Do gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonists have a lower risk of cardiovascular complications in comparison to agonists?

Several studies have shown that the decreased testosterone levels in patients with prostate cancer who undergo androgen deprivation therapy with gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists can have increased risk of cardiovascular complications. The assumption that GnRH antagonists have a lower cardiovascular risk in comparison to agonists is not definitely demonstrated. It appears that therapy of hormone sensitive prostate cancer with GnRH antagonists is favourabe in patients with higher cardiovascular risk or a positive history of cardiovascular disease. This paper provides an update from clinical studies dealing with the cardiotoxicity of GnRH antagonists and agonists. Tab. 1, Ref. 41, on-line full text (Free, PDF) www. cardiologyletters.sk
