Syncope unit - current trend in diagnostics and therapy of syncope

Syncope is a frequent symptom of a broad spectrum of diseases encountered by general practioners and different specialists. Data from international registries show that contemporary clinical practice is characterized by excessive and non-selective use of diagnostic methods often in contradiction to current guidelines. This represents a burden to the patient, health care personnel and leads to depletion of economic resources. The current trend in syncope management is the creation of specialized syncope units (SU). An SU ensures the multidisciplinary approach and implementation of evidence-based medicine and current guidelines as well as the effective use of economic resources. An SU is a facility with appropriate equipment and personnel performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. An SU can also be a virtual unit with a competent team within one or more specialized departments.
