The influence of wine on cholesterol levels in people with low to middle cardiovascular risk (In Vino Veritas sub-analysis)

Aims: Wine consumption is associated with a positive effect on blood cholesterol level. Data from prospective, long-term, head-to-head comparisons of different types of wine on blood cholesterol level are not sufficient.

Methods and results: In Vino Veritas (IVV) study is a long-term, prospective, multi-centre, randomized trial comparing effects of red and white wine on atherosclerosis. 157 healthy subjects with a mild to moderate risk of cardiovascular diseases were randomized into two groups to white (WW, n=74) or red wine (RW, n=72) consumption for one year. We did not find an increase in HDL-cholesterol in the whole group at the end of follow-up (1.66±0.58 vs. 1.62±0.49, p=0.180). There was also no difference in HDL-cholesterol between both groups at the end of follow-up (1.60 ±0.53 vs. 1.64 ±0.46, p=0.634). LDL-cholesterol level was significantly lower in the whole group at the end of follow-up (3.73 ± 0.90 vs. 3.48 ± 0.94, p=<0.001), with no difference between the groups (3.37±0.75 vs. 3.60±1.10, p=0.134) Conclusion: After a year of wine drinking we have found a decrease in LDL cholesterol level in healthy subjects with mild to moderate cardiovascular risk. There was no significant change in HDL cholesterol level in the whole group. There was no difference in white or red wine consumption in LDL and HDL cholesterol levels.
